What Makes Couch Grass Sports-Grade?
Sports-Grade Couch Grass Turf for Your Own Yard
Groundskeepers choose couch grass because it does three things very well: it grows into a dense, fine-leafed mat, it recovers quickly after heavy use and it can be mown low without losing its even finish. Those qualities make it the backbone of many playing surfaces, and they translate perfectly to a busy home lawn.
We grow two couch grasses on our Cornwallis farm. Wintergreen is the tough, thick-matted option seen on stadiums, and Greenlees Park is the darker, finer couch found on golf and bowling greens. Both are cut after you order and are normally ready within a day or two.
In short: A family-run Hawkesbury farm, Arrow Turf grows sports-grade couch grass turf in two varieties and supplies it by delivery, pickup or installation. Cost depends on the variety, square metres, site preparation, access and distance. As we cut to order, most couch grass is ready within one to two days of your booking.

Sports-Grade Couch Versus Our Other Grasses
The Grass Behind Great Surfaces
Couch Grass Turf With the Traits of a Playing Field
Couch grass turf suits people who want their lawn to perform as well as it looks. Families with energetic children, dog owners, backyard cricketers and anyone hosting regular gatherings need grass that bounces back quickly. Schools and clubs need the same thing on a larger scale. Couch grass delivers through its fast recovery from wear, its dense growth and its ability to cope with dry spells. It is also soft underfoot, so a sports-grade surface does not have to feel harsh or scratchy.
We grow our couch grasses with these traits in mind, harvesting each order fresh so the turf has the vigour to establish quickly. Arrow Turf can deliver by forklift truck, have your order ready for farm pickup or send an experienced crew to prepare the ground and lay it for you. Wondering how the two couches compare with buffalo and Kikuyu? See our turf varieties side by side.

Problems Couch Grass Solves
Worn Goal Areas, Bumpy Surfaces and Dry Backyards
The same problems that plague sports fields show up in home lawns every day, and couch grass is built to handle all of them.
Bald patches in high-use zones. Areas in front of a cricket stump, under a swing or along a dog’s favourite track lose grass first. Couch grass recovers quickly from wear, so these spots regain their cover instead of turning into dusty hollows.
Uneven, lumpy ground. A rough surface spoils both play and appearance, and it makes mowing harder too. Laying a dense, fine couch over a levelled base with 80/20 underlay produces a smooth surface that is safer for running games and looks far tidier.
Grass that suffers in dry weather. Couch copes well with dry conditions, so an established lawn holds together through periods with little rain. That reliability is a big reason sporting grounds choose it, and home lawns benefit in exactly the same way.

Couch Grass Turf Pricing
How Much Does Couch Grass Turf Cost?
The price of couch grass turf comes down to the variety you select, the total area and the condition of your site. Lawns needing old grass removed, extra levelling or a deep underlay layer cost more to prepare, and delivery distance, access and installation also shape the final quote.
| Price driver | How it affects your cost |
|---|---|
| Variety | Couch sits between Kikuyu and soft leaf buffalo in price per m². |
| Lawn area | Turf is priced per square metre, and larger orders can attract better rates. |
| Pickup, delivery or installation | Collecting from our farm avoids a delivery charge; delivery and laying are quoted on top. |
| Extras | Turf underlay, lawn starter fertiliser or water crystals add to the total. |
Tell us about the area you want to cover and how it will be used, and we will send a free couch grass quote.
Grown on the River
Where We Grow and Harvest Our Couch Grasses
Our couch grass is grown at 104 Cornwallis Road, Cornwallis, on the Hawkesbury River, not far from Windsor and Richmond. The farm has been in our family for over 45 years, and we manage both couch varieties to build the density and strength at harvest that sports-grade turf depends on.
Rolls are harvested only when an order comes in, then sent out on pallets to homes, clubs, schools and councils across Greater Sydney and the surrounding regions, six days a week. Customers and trade buyers can also collect from the farm at a booked time, with our team on hand to help load by hand or machinery.

How We Supply Couch Grass Turf for Homes and Sports Areas
Whether it is a family backyard or a full playing field, we follow a clear process. These steps explain how your couch grass is ordered, harvested, transported and laid with care.
1. Measure your lawn: work out the square metres you need, or send us your measurements to double-check.
2. Choose how you receive it: collect from our farm, book delivery six days a week, or have our crew install it.
3. We cut it fresh: your turf is harvested to order and usually ready within a day or two.
4. Lay and water in: lay it on the day it arrives and water deeply for the first few weeks.
Comfort, Low Mowing and a Groomed Couch Grass Look
Couch grass is also chosen for the way it looks and feels in everyday use around the home and garden.
Soft despite its toughness. Its fine leaf feels gentle on bare feet, making it just as good for lounging on a summer afternoon as it is for a game of touch footy. Kids, pets and adults all appreciate it.
A low, tight sports finish. Couch can be cut low and rewards regular mowing with an even, manicured surface that looks as though a groundskeeper has just been through on match day.
A darker, finer option. Greenlees Park gives couch lovers a deeper colour and finer texture for showpiece lawns, front gardens and practice greens where good looks matter most of all.
Maxi rolls for big areas. Large playing surfaces and open grounds can be laid with maxi rolls, meaning fewer joins, faster coverage and a more uniform finish across the whole field or lawn.
Frequently Asked Questions About Couch Grass Turf
Why is couch grass turf used on sports fields?
Couch grass turf is used on sports fields because it forms a dense mat, recovers quickly from heavy use and can be mown low for an even playing surface. Those same traits make it a great choice for home lawns that see plenty of activity.
Is couch grass soft enough for children?
Yes. Although it is tough, couch has a fine leaf that feels soft underfoot. Wintergreen in particular is known for being comfortable despite its wear tolerance, which makes it a good fit for family yards where kids play barefoot.
Does couch grass turf need a lot of water?
New couch grass turf should be watered deeply once or twice a day for about three weeks after laying. Once established, couch copes well with dry weather, so you can usually reduce watering well below what the establishment period required.
Can couch grass grow under trees?
Couch is a full-sun grass and is not suited to heavy shade. Under dense tree canopies it tends to thin, so our team can suggest a different variety from our range for those shaded patches of the garden.
How low can couch grass be mown?
Couch can be mown low for a sports-field finish. Start with a high setting for the first mow two to three weeks after laying, then lower the cut gradually. Regular mowing is what keeps couch dense and tidy.
What is the best couch grass for a backyard cricket pitch?
Wintergreen is a strong choice thanks to its toughness, fast recovery and ability to be cut low. For a pitch with a premium putting-green feel, Greenlees Park offers a finer texture but rewards more attentive mowing.
Can schools and councils order couch grass turf?
Yes, we supply schools, councils, parks and property managers as well as homes. Large areas can use maxi rolls, and our experienced crews install couch grass turf for commercial and public projects, from old turf removal to watering in.
How do I get couch grass delivered or installed?
See our turf delivery in Sydney page for drop-off details, or our installation service if you would like an experienced crew to prepare the ground and lay your new couch lawn. Both explain what is included and how to book.
