Less Work, Better Lawn

Why Matilda Buffalo Turf Makes Lawn Care Easier

Not everyone wants to spend their weekends behind a mower. Matilda Buffalo turf grows at a steady, manageable rate, so it keeps a tidy shape without needing constant attention. Its finer stems and stolons knit into a thick mat that leaves little room for bare patches, and it stays comfortable to walk, sit and play on.

Because Matilda copes with full sun and moderate shade, you rarely need to juggle different grasses across one yard. We grow it on our family farm at Cornwallis and cut it only when you order, so the rolls you receive are healthy, fresh and ready to establish quickly.

In short: Arrow Turf is a family-owned turf grower on the Hawkesbury River with over 45 years of experience. We provide Matilda Buffalo turf for collection, delivery or full installation around Greater Sydney. Costs are driven by lawn area, access, distance and site preparation, and fresh-cut rolls are usually ready in a day or two.

A Lawn That Looks After Itself

Matilda Buffalo Turf for Busy, Low-Fuss Households

Low-maintenance lawns appeal to a wide range of people: working families with packed schedules, retirees downsizing their garden effort, landlords and property managers who need a yard that stays presentable between tenants, and businesses that want tidy grounds without heavy upkeep. For all of them, the grass they choose at the start decides how much work comes later. A vigorous, fast-running grass can creep into beds and need mowing almost weekly in warm weather, while a slower, denser grass keeps its shape for longer.

Matilda grows more steadily than that, which is why we often recommend it to customers who value their time. We grow and harvest it ourselves, then supply it for pickup, deliver it on our forklift-equipped trucks or lay it with our installation crews after preparing the ground properly. You’ll find the full growing profile and care notes in our page on Matilda soft leaf buffalo turf.

Upkeep Headaches Solved

Endless Mowing, Creeping Edges and Bare Patches: What Matilda Buffalo Fixes

Owners who switch to Matilda Buffalo turf are often trying to escape the same three maintenance headaches. Here’s how it helps with each one, and why so many busy households now ask for it by name.

Mowing every few days. Fast-growing grasses can shoot up quickly once the weather warms, leaving you mowing far more often than you’d like. Matilda’s steady, manageable growth means a regular mowing routine is usually enough to keep it looking sharp.

Grass spilling into garden beds. Aggressive runners can invade borders and paths, adding hours of edging and weeding. Matilda’s finer stolons form a compact, dense lawn that is easier to keep within its boundaries with routine edging.

Thin areas that invite weeds. Sparse lawns give weeds space to move in. Matilda forms a dense, lush cover that leaves fewer gaps, and its tolerance of moderate shade helps it stay thick in spots where other lawns can thin out over time.

Growing Matilda Buffalo

How We Grow Matilda Buffalo on the Hawkesbury

Our turf farm sits at 104 Cornwallis Road in Cornwallis, close to Windsor and Richmond in the Hawkesbury region. Matilda Buffalo is grown in our own paddocks and looked after by our family team, who have been producing turf here for more than four decades.

We cut Matilda only when an order is confirmed, so it hasn’t been sitting around before it reaches you. From the farm we supply homeowners, landscapers, builders and property managers across the Hawkesbury and Greater Sydney. Our trucks deliver six days a week, and pickup from the farm is available for anyone who prefers to collect.

How We Prepare and Supply Your Matilda Buffalo

From the first conversation to the day your lawn goes down, we keep the process simple and well organised. The four steps below explain how we quote, harvest and supply your Matilda Buffalo turf.

1. Measure your lawn: work out the square metres you need, or send us your measurements to double-check.

2. Choose how you receive it: collect from our farm, book delivery six days a week, or have our crew install it.

3. We cut it fresh: your turf is harvested to order and usually ready within a day or two.

4. Lay and water in: lay it on the day it arrives and water deeply for the first few weeks.

New-Lawn Watering, Mowing Height and Mixed Light: Getting Matilda Started

Low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance, especially in the first few weeks, so these points matter.

Watering during establishment. A newly laid lawn needs deep watering once or twice a day for roughly the first three weeks. Consistent moisture helps Matilda’s roots move down into the underlay and soil below.

Mowing too early or low. Give your Matilda two to three weeks before its first mow, and use a high setting. Cutting too soon or too short can stress the grass while it is still settling.

Yards with mixed sun. Matilda performs well in full sun and copes with moderate shade, so it can generally cover open lawn and partly shaded corners with a single variety and a consistent look.

Poor base preparation. Even an easy-care grass needs a good foundation. Clearing old turf, levelling and laying on an 80/20 underlay about 100 to 150 mm deep sets Matilda up for steady, healthy growth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Matilda Buffalo Turf

Is Matilda Buffalo turf really low maintenance?

Matilda Buffalo turf has steady, manageable growth, so once established it usually needs less frequent mowing than vigorous grasses in warm weather. Like any lawn, it still benefits from regular mowing, watering in dry spells and good preparation before laying, but the ongoing effort is modest.

How often will I need to mow Matilda?

Mowing frequency depends on the season, rainfall and how you like your lawn to look. Matilda’s steady growth means a regular routine through the warmer months is generally enough. Keep the first mow for two to three weeks after laying, on a high setting.

Does Matilda Buffalo turf spread into garden beds?

Matilda Buffalo turf has finer stolons than traditional buffalo and forms a compact, dense lawn. Like all running grasses it will grow towards the edges, but routine edging keeps it neat. Garden edging or a clear border also helps define where the lawn stops.

Can Matilda grow under trees?

Matilda copes with moderate shade, so lawns under scattered trees or beside a house generally do well. Dense canopy that blocks most of the light is tough on any grass. If you have a heavily shaded area, mention it in your enquiry and we’ll give you practical advice.

Is Matilda Buffalo turf soft enough for children?

Yes. Matilda Buffalo turf has a soft leaf that is pleasant to sit, play and relax on, which makes it popular for family backyards. It was also bred in Australia to cope with wear and tear from busy households, so it handles regular play.

How much water does a new Matilda lawn need?

For roughly the first three weeks, water deeply once or twice a day so the roots can establish. After that, reduce watering gradually and water more deeply but less often, adjusting for hot or dry weather. Edges and corners tend to dry out first, so check them closely.

Can I lay Matilda myself?

Many homeowners do. Prepare the ground by removing the old lawn, levelling and spreading an 80/20 underlay, then lay the rolls tightly on the day they arrive and water them in well. If you’d rather not do the heavy lifting, our crews can install it for you.

Where can I learn more about installation and care?

Our turf installation team in Sydney can prepare and lay your new lawn, and our lawn care guide covers watering, mowing and seasonal upkeep. Between them, you’ll have everything you need to keep your Matilda looking its best.

Trevor was fantastic from the very first time I spoke to him. He informed me on every detail , delivery time, watering/care instructions . He made sure the delivery truck didn’t park on my driveway and also marked out my block perfectly- making sure the turf layers got the job done correctly first time. Thank you so much for a truly great experience. The turf looks beautiful
