How To Prepare For Your New Lawn

If you already have a lawn , it’s a good idea to use a product like “Roundup” to kill the existing grass. After the grass is dead remove the turf and top layer of soil.

Place new soil by using a top soil mix such as 80/20 Turf underlay. This will give the required drainage and promote deep root growth.

Ensure the turf underlay is laid out evenly and at a depth of around 100-150 mm depending on the quality of soil underneath.

Your space is now prepared for the new grass to be installed. You can add water crystals or a lawn starter on top of the soil before installing the turf. This will help keep it moist when you water it and on hot days.

Do not add fertilizer to the soil as it may burn the roots of the turf.

Laying Your Lawn

Begin by starting at the furthest point and work towards the exit so you don’t walk over your freshly laid grass.

Lay the rolls out ensuring joints are butted up tight leaving no gaps or overlaps. If you are laying on a slope, lay across the slope.

Use a knife or similar to cut rolls at the end of a row or when needing to trim around objects such as trees.

Stagger the joints of each row in a brick pattern.

You may use a roller to smooth out any bumps and to tighten the joints in the rolls, although this is not necessary as it will all settle over time.

Give your new lawn a deep water immediately after laying.

Turf After Care

Watering

To ensure your new lawn thrives, please follow these watering instructions:

1. Water Immediately: Water your lawn thoroughly with a sprinkler right after installation.

2. Daily Watering: Water deeply 1-2 times a day for the first 3 weeks, 30 minutes in each section with a sprinkler.

3. Adjust Gradually: After the turf has established, reduce watering to 2-3 times per week or as it needs.

Mowing

After 2-3 weeks,  your new lawn will be ready for its first mow. The first should just be a trim to get it all even, set your mower on the highest setting to do this. Gradually over time you will be able to lower the height of the cut to the desired height for your variety.

Fertilising

You may fertilise 6-8 weeks after installation.  It is recommended that you fertilise 3 times a year – Spring, Summer and Autumn. Ensure you give a deep water after fertilising as it can burn the turf if not watered in correctly.
