Is your 1980s lawn past its best?

Family-Friendly Turf Supplies for Menai Homes

Menai was largely developed from the 1980s, with brick project homes on suburban blocks bordered by bushland. Many of the original lawns are now decades old, thin and patchy, and ready for renewal. The sandstone-derived soils on the plateau are fairly sandy and low in nutrients, and blocks near the bush often get shade for part of the day.

We grow Sir Walter and Matilda soft leaf buffalo, Kikuyu, Wintergreen and Greenlees Park on our own farm, and we’ll help you choose the right one for your sun, soil and family. Every order is harvested fresh and ready within a day or two, with quantities worked out to suit your block.

In short: Arrow Turf is a family-run Cornwallis grower that has been producing turf for more than 45 years. We supply fresh buffalo, Kikuyu and couch to Menai homeowners, landscapers and schools across the Sutherland Shire. Variety, lawn area and access drive the cost, and turf is typically harvested and ready within a day or two.

What Turf Varieties Can We Supplies?

Renewing Menai's Family Lawns

Turf Supplies for Menai Family Homes

Menai’s family homes were built around backyards, and many of those lawns have now been in place since the 1980s. After decades of use, they’re often thin, uneven and full of weeds. Sandy, nutrient-poor soils on the plateau don’t help, and homes on the bushland edge often deal with shade and leaf drop. Families want a lawn that’s soft enough for kids, tough enough for pets and green enough to enjoy year-round.

We’ll ask about sun, shade, soil and how your lawn is used, then recommend from our five varieties. Soft leaf buffalo suits family yards and partly shaded spots, while Kikuyu is hard-wearing and loves full sun. We can include 80/20 turf underlay to improve sandy soil and calculate quantities for your block. Homeowners, landscapers and schools all order from us, and every pallet is cut fresh on our farm. Menai Plateau Sandstone

Nutrient-Poor Sandstone Soils on the Menai Plateau

Menai sits on a bushland plateau with sandstone-derived soils, and those soils play a big part in how well a new lawn establishes and stays healthy.

Low-nutrient sandy soil. Sandstone-derived soils are fairly sandy and lack the nutrients and organic matter that young turf needs. Spreading 100–150 mm of 80/20 turf underlay before laying gives roots a richer base and helps the lawn establish more evenly across the whole yard.

Soil that dries out quickly. Sandy soils drain fast, which can leave new turf thirsty in warm weather. Watering deeply once or twice a day for the first three weeks is essential, and underlay helps hold moisture where roots need it. Early-morning watering loses less to evaporation on warm days.

Uneven ground on older blocks. After decades of mowing, play and settling, lawns on sandy soil can become bumpy and uneven. Removing the old grass, levelling with underlay and laying fresh turf gives a smoother, more even surface for play and makes mowing far easier.

How Much Do Turf Supplies Cost in Menai?

For Menai homes, turf supply costs depend on the size of your lawn, the variety chosen for sun or shade, whether underlay is needed for sandy soil and how easy it is to access the yard. Typical suburban backyards vary in size, as the table below explains.

Price driver How it affects your cost
Turf variety Kikuyu is the most budget-friendly; soft leaf buffalo and premium couch cost more per m².
Quantity Turf is priced per square metre, and larger orders can attract better rates.
Roll format Maxi rolls suit big areas and are quoted separately from standard rolls.
Pickup, delivery or installation Collecting from the farm avoids a delivery charge; delivery and laying are quoted on top.

Renewing 1980s Lawns Along Menai's Bushland Edge

Many Menai lawns are reaching the end of their life, and homes on the bushland edge face a few extra challenges when renewing them.

Thin, patchy original lawns. Lawns laid in the 1980s have often thinned out and filled with weeds. Replacing them with fresh turf gives instant, even coverage and a clean start for the next few decades of family use.

Shade from bushland trees. Homes backing onto bushland can be shaded for part of the day. Soft leaf buffalo varieties like Sir Walter and Matilda are often chosen for these spots, while Kikuyu suits sunnier areas of the backyard.

Leaf drop from nearby bush. Leaves and bark from nearby trees can build up on a new lawn and block light. Raking regularly while turf establishes helps it root down well and stay dense.

Family wear and tear. Kids, pets and backyard cricket put constant pressure on grass. Hard-wearing Kikuyu recovers quickly in sunny yards, while soft leaf buffalo offers a comfortable surface for little ones.

Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Supplies in Menai

What turf supplies suit Menai's sandy soils?

Our turf supplies for Menai include Sir Walter and Matilda soft leaf buffalo, Kikuyu, Wintergreen Couch and Greenlees Park Couch. On Menai’s sandy, nutrient-poor soils, preparing with underlay helps any variety establish, and we’ll help you choose based on sun, shade and use.

Is it time to replace my 1980s Menai lawn?

If your lawn is thin, patchy, uneven or full of weeds, replacing it with fresh turf is often the quickest way to a better result. Many Menai homes are now renewing original lawns from the 1980s.

Do I need underlay on sandy soil?

On the Menai plateau it is well worth it. Sandstone-derived soils are sandy and low in nutrients, so a 100–150 mm layer of 80/20 turf underlay gives roots a richer base and helps hold moisture. Ask us to include it with your turf.

Which grass is best for a shaded Menai backyard near the bush?

For partly shaded backyards near bushland, soft leaf buffalo varieties like Sir Walter and Matilda are popular choices. Kikuyu prefers full sun. Let us know how much light your Menai turf supply needs to cope with and we’ll recommend a variety.

When will my Menai turf be ready?

Your turf is cut fresh once the order is placed and is usually ready within a day or two. Our trucks head to the Shire six days a week, or you can collect from the farm with a day’s notice if you have a trailer.

Do schools and landscapers order turf supply for Menai?

Schools, landscapers, builders and property managers working in Menai and across the Shire order from us, along with homeowners. We’ll time harvests to suit your project and quantities, including maxi rolls for larger open areas such as school grounds.

Can I also arrange pickup, delivery or installation in Menai?

Each option covers Menai and the surrounding Shire suburbs. Choose turf pickup for Menai to collect it yourself, turf delivery in Menai for pallets placed on site, or turf installation in Menai for a fully laid lawn.

How do I look after new turf on sandy soil?

Lay the turf on arrival and water deeply once or twice daily for about three weeks, as sandy soil dries out fast. Keep leaves raked off, and give it a first mow after two to three weeks on a high setting.

Trevor was fantastic from the very first time I spoke to him. He informed me on every detail , delivery time, watering/care instructions . He made sure the delivery truck didn’t park on my driveway and also marked out my block perfectly- making sure the turf layers got the job done correctly first time. Thank you so much for a truly great experience. The turf looks beautiful
