Coastal Turf Installation Across the Northern Beaches

The Northern Beaches cover beachside apartments and older cottages near the sand, established family homes on the plateau and larger leafy blocks on the Pittwater peninsula. Soils swing from loose coastal sand to Hawkesbury sandstone on the ridges, and many lawns deal with salt, wind and shade from established bushland trees.

We remove the old lawn, level the ground and build a better root zone with 80/20 underlay at roughly 100 to 150 mm. Turf is cut to order at our Cornwallis farm, laid on arrival with staggered joints across any slope and watered in thoroughly before we finish, with aftercare advice suited to coastal conditions.

In short: Arrow Turf is a family-owned Hawkesbury turf farm with 45+ years of experience, installing lawns across the Northern Beaches. We handle old lawn removal, levelling, underlay, laying and watering in. Price depends on lawn size, slope, access, soil preparation and variety, and turf is harvested to order and ready within a day or two.

What Turf Varieties Can We Install For You?

Turf Varieties for Northern Beaches Gardens

Lawns by the Sea

Your Turf Installation Team for the Northern Beaches

Lawns across the Northern Beaches face a mix of challenges that changes from suburb to suburb. Near the water in Manly, Dee Why and Narrabeen, sandy soils drain fast and salt-laden winds dry out turf. On the plateau around Frenchs Forest, established gardens contend with shade from mature trees. Up on the Pittwater peninsula, leafy blocks are often steep and heavily shaded by gums and angophoras. Each setting demands a different approach to preparation and variety choice.

We plan every Northern Beaches installation around the site’s soil, slope and light. Sandy coastal yards get a solid underlay layer to hold moisture, sloping blocks are levelled or eased and laid across the fall, and shaded areas are assessed before we recommend a variety. Our crews remove the old lawn, lay fresh turf with tight joins and water it in, for homes and commercial properties alike. Find out more about our turf installation service in Sydney.

What Your Northern Beaches Turf Installation Can Include

  • Site inspection and advice: we look at sun, shade, slope and drainage, then recommend the right variety for your yard.
  • Old lawn and weed removal: existing grass and weeds are cleared so your new turf isn’t competing from day one.
  • Levelling and soil preparation: we level the area and correct low spots so water drains away and the lawn finishes even.
  • Quality turf underlay: a fresh layer of turf underlay gives new roots the drainage and nutrients they need.
  • Fresh-cut turf, expertly laid: turf from our own farm is laid with tight, staggered joints for a seamless finish.
  • Watering in and aftercare guidance: we water the new lawn in and leave you with clear instructions for the first few weeks.
Sand and Salt

Salt Spray and Sandy Soils: What Northern Beaches Lawns Face

Along the coastal strip from Manly to Avalon Beach, sand and sea air are the main hurdles for a new lawn. Here’s how we prepare for them.

Beachside sand holding little water. Beachside sand holds very little water, so new turf can dry out before its roots reach down. We add 80/20 underlay at around 100 to 150 mm to create a moisture-holding layer, and recommend deep watering once or twice a day for roughly three weeks.

Salt-laden coastal winds. Onshore breezes carry salt and dry out exposed turf, especially on blocks facing the ocean. A well-prepared base and consistent watering through establishment help the lawn take hold despite the exposure.

Small, paved-in beachside lawns. Many cottages and apartments near the beach have small, awkward lawn areas surrounded by paving. We cut and fit turf carefully so edges are tight and don’t dry out in the wind. Offcuts are pieced into corners so nothing is left bare.

How Much Does Turf Installation Cost on the Northern Beaches?

Northern Beaches installations vary from small beachside courtyards to steep, leafy Pittwater gardens, and pricing reflects that. The area being turfed, how steep the block is, access for carrying materials, how much old lawn and leaf litter must be cleared, underlay depth and your variety choice all affect the quote.

Price driver How it affects your cost
Lawn area Larger areas cost more overall but often less per square metre.
Turf variety Kikuyu is the most budget-friendly; soft leaf buffalo and premium couch cost more per m².
Site preparation Removing old lawn, levelling and adding turf underlay all affect the total.
Access and slope Tight side access, steps or steep blocks can add time to the job.

Narrabeen to Pittwater

Installing Lawns From Narrabeen to the Pittwater Peninsula

We install turf throughout the Northern Beaches Council area, from the southern beaches up to the Pittwater peninsula. Our crews have laid lawns for homes near Narrabeen Lakes, in the leafy streets close to Palm Beach and along the plateau suburbs off Mona Vale Road.

Regular installation areas include Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Avalon Beach, Frenchs Forest and Newport, as well as the rest of the peninsula. Our farm at 104 Cornwallis Road, Cornwallis, is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes away via Windsor Road, the M2 and Mona Vale Road. Turf is cut to order so it’s fresh when our crew lays it on your property.

How We Handle Lawn Installation on the Northern Beaches

Coastal sand, steep slopes and heavy shade all call for a slightly different plan. We assess each Northern Beaches property first, then work through a clear sequence of preparation, laying and watering.

1. Free quote and site check: tell us about your project and we’ll assess the area, access and soil.

2. Preparation: we remove the old lawn, level the ground and spread quality turf underlay.

3. Laying: fresh turf from our farm is laid with tight, staggered joints and trimmed neatly to the edges.

4. Water in and aftercare: we water the lawn in and give you a simple watering and mowing plan for the first weeks.

Why Steep Blocks and Angophora Shade Shape Pittwater Lawns

Further from the sand, on the ridges and peninsula, the challenges shift from salt to slope and shade.

Steep, sloping blocks. Many homes on the ridges and peninsula are built into hillsides. We level and terrace where practical, then lay turf across the slope with staggered joints so it knits together and holds in heavy rain.

Angophora and gum shade. Tall bushland trees cast deep shade and reduce the hours of direct sun reaching a lawn. We assess light levels carefully before recommending a variety, and suggest alternatives for spots that are too dark.

Sandstone ridges with thin soil. Ridge-top soils over Hawkesbury sandstone are often shallow and dry. A generous underlay layer gives the turf a deeper, more reliable root zone.

Leaf drop and root competition. Bushland trees drop leaves and send roots into lawns. Clearing debris before laying and keeping the new lawn raked helps it establish.

Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Installation on the Northern Beaches

Do you offer turf installation on the Northern Beaches?

Yes. We provide turf installation across the Northern Beaches, from Manly and Dee Why to Mona Vale, Avalon Beach and Palm Beach. Our crews remove old lawn, level the ground, add underlay, lay fresh turf and water it in.

Can turf grow in sandy beachside soil?

It can when the base is built up properly. We spread 80/20 underlay at around 100 to 150 mm to hold moisture in fast-draining sand. Deep watering once or twice a day for about three weeks then helps the turf root firmly.

Can you install turf on a steep Northern Beaches block?

Yes. Steep blocks are common across the Northern Beaches, especially on the peninsula. Our turf installation includes levelling or easing slopes where practical and laying rolls across the fall with staggered joints so they knit and hold.

Which turf suits shade under gums on the Northern Beaches?

It depends on how much direct sun reaches the lawn. During your Northern Beaches turf installation quote, we assess light levels and recommend a suitable variety. For heavily shaded corners, other landscaping options may work better.

How far is your farm from the Northern Beaches?

The drive from our Cornwallis farm takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, heading along Windsor Road, the M2 and Mona Vale Road. All turf is cut to order, so it arrives fresh and our crew lays it straight away rather than leaving it to sit.

How do you deal with salt air on new lawns?

Thorough preparation and consistent watering through the establishment period are key, particularly on ocean-facing blocks. A moisture-holding underlay layer and deep watering help new turf cope with drying, salt-laden winds while its roots grow down.

Can I get turf without installation?

Yes. If you’d like to lay the lawn yourself, you can order turf supplies for the Northern Beaches, collect turf via turf pickup from our farm, or book turf delivery to the Northern Beaches with forklift placement.

When can I mow and use the new lawn?

Allow two to three weeks for the turf to root, then mow on a high setting. Once it’s rooted and had its first cut, it can handle normal use, though shaded areas may need a little longer to settle.

Trevor was fantastic from the very first time I spoke to him. He informed me on every detail , delivery time, watering/care instructions . He made sure the delivery truck didn’t park on my driveway and also marked out my block perfectly- making sure the turf layers got the job done correctly first time. Thank you so much for a truly great experience. The turf looks beautiful
