Towing turf up the mountain?

Turf Pickup That Suits the Blue Mountains

Mountain properties are rarely simple to reach with a large truck, and many homes sit on steep, bushy blocks with tight driveways. Collecting your own turf gives you control: you can bring home a manageable load in a ute or trailer, park where it suits you and carry rolls to the lawn at your own pace.

To get started, order online or by phone and choose a pickup date and time. Let us know the day before if you would like to collect the next day. We cut your turf fresh, stack it on pallets and help you load it by hand or with machinery, ready for the drive back up the highway.

In short: Arrow Turf is a family-owned turf farm at Cornwallis, growing on the Hawkesbury River for over 45 years. Customers across the Blue Mountains collect fresh-cut turf from us, around 40 minutes to the lower mountains. Price is driven mainly by variety and area, and orders are usually ready within a day or two.

Collect for Mountain Homes

Turf Pickup for Blue Mountains Homes

Gardens in the Blue Mountains have to cope with conditions you do not see down on the plains. Sandy, acidic soils over sandstone, steep blocks that shed water, tall gums that cast deep shade and cold winters with frost, and occasional snow in the upper mountains, all affect how a lawn performs. Many cottages have small, sheltered lawns, while lower mountain homes may have more open space. Pickup suits both, letting owners buy just the amount they can lay in a day and come back later for more.

Arrow Turf grows every roll on our own farm, so the turf you collect is cut fresh for your order. We will help you choose a variety for shade and cold, work out how much you need and keep loads within what your vehicle can comfortably tow up the hill. What Your Blue Mountains Turf Pickup Can Include

  • Fresh-cut turf, harvested to order: your turf is cut close to your pickup time, so it reaches your site cool, moist and ready to lay.
  • A choice of five premium varieties: Sir Walter or Matilda soft leaf buffalo, Kikuyu, Wintergreen couch or Greenlees Park couch, matched to your sun, shade and foot traffic.
  • Help with measuring and quantities: send us your lawn dimensions and we’ll confirm the square metres, including a small allowance for trimming around edges.
  • Loading assistance: our team loads your order by hand or with machinery and stacks it evenly, so your load stays stable on the drive home.
  • Vehicle and load advice: fresh turf is heavy, so we’ll tell you roughly how much your ute or trailer can safely carry before you set off.
  • Laying and aftercare tips: take home simple guidance on soil preparation, laying and watering so your new lawn roots in quickly.
Mountain Conditions

Frost, Cold Winters and Sandy Soils: What Blue Mountains Lawns Face

The higher you go in the Blue Mountains, the colder winters become, and the sandstone country beneath most gardens produces sandy, acidic soil. Both have a big influence on which turf thrives and how well it establishes after you bring it home.

Mountain frost and occasional snow. Upper mountain villages see hard frosts and sometimes snow, which slows warm-season grasses and can brown them off. Laying in the warmer months gives turf time to root in before the cold arrives.

Sandy, acidic soil. Soil over Hawkesbury sandstone is often thin, sandy and low in nutrients. Spreading 100–150 mm of 80/20 turf underlay before pickup day gives your new lawn a far better root zone to grow into.

Deep shade under tall gums. Big eucalypts block sun and compete for water. Sir Walter or Matilda soft leaf buffalo is usually a better choice than Kikuyu in shaded spots, and keeping leaf litter cleared helps the grass breathe.

How Much Does Turf Pickup Cost in the Blue Mountains?

Turf pickup is a cost-conscious way for Blue Mountains residents to buy a new lawn, because you take care of the transport. The final figure depends mostly on the variety you pick and how many square metres you need, plus whether you split the job into several trips. These are the main factors.

Price driver How it affects your cost
Turf variety Kikuyu is the most budget-friendly; soft leaf buffalo and premium couch cost more per m².
Order size Larger orders can attract better rates per square metre.
Pickup vs delivery Collecting from our farm removes the delivery charge entirely.
Extras Turf underlay, lawn starter fertiliser or water crystals add to the total.

Send us your lawn measurements and which village you are in, and we’ll prepare a free quote for your collection.

How Turf Pickup Works for Blue Mountains Customers

Bringing turf up the mountain takes a bit more planning than a run across the suburbs. Follow these steps and your rolls will be on the ground and watered soon after you get home.

1. Measure and choose: measure your lawn area and pick a variety, or ask us to recommend one for your sun, shade and soil.

2. Book your pickup: order by phone or online and choose a date and time, giving us at least a day’s notice.

3. Collect from the farm: your turf is cut fresh and ready when you arrive, and our team helps load it securely.

4. Lay it the same day: prepare your soil before you collect, then lay the turf on arrival and water it in thoroughly.

Steep Bushy Blocks: Getting Turf Home in the Blue Mountains

Steep driveways and sloping gardens are part of mountain living, and they change the way you should plan a turf collection from start to finish.

Towing a heavy load uphill. Fresh turf weighs roughly 15–20 kg per square metre, and the climb up the Great Western Highway works your vehicle hard. Stay well within your towing and payload limits and split bigger orders into two trips.

No room to unload near the lawn. Narrow driveways and steps can mean carrying every roll. Plan a clear path, have a barrow ready and stack rolls in the shade until they are laid.

Water running off sloping lawns. On steep ground, water runs off before it soaks in. Lay rolls across the slope, stagger the joins and water slowly and deeply for about three weeks.

Short days in the cooler months. Mountain winters bring early sunsets. Book a morning pickup so there is enough daylight to lay and water everything once you are home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Pickup in the Blue Mountains

How does turf pickup work for the Blue Mountains?

Turf pickup for the Blue Mountains is simple. Order online or by phone, choose a date and time, and we will harvest your turf fresh at our Cornwallis farm. When you arrive, our team helps load your ute or trailer, and you head back up the highway to lay it.

How far is your farm from the Blue Mountains?

Our farm at 104 Cornwallis Road is around 40 minutes from the lower mountains via Penrith and the Great Western Highway, and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Katoomba. Allow time for the climb if you are towing a heavy load.

Which turf suits cold, frosty mountain winters?

Soft leaf buffalo such as Sir Walter and Matilda generally handles cooler conditions and shade better than many other options. In frost-prone upper mountain villages, lay in spring or summer so the turf is well rooted before winter. We can help you choose.

What can I do about shade from tall gums?

Choose a shade-tolerant variety like Sir Walter or Matilda, clear leaf litter regularly and water a little more deeply where tree roots compete. Lawns that get no direct sun at all will struggle with any turf, so consider the sunniest areas first.

Can I split turf pickup for a Blue Mountains lawn into stages?

Yes, and on steep mountain blocks it often makes sense. Collecting in stages means each section can be laid and watered properly, and smaller loads are easier on your vehicle when climbing the highway. Book each pickup time with us in advance.

How do I prepare sandy mountain soil before collecting?

Remove the old grass and weeds, level the ground, and spread 100–150 mm of 80/20 turf underlay. Sandy, acidic soils over sandstone hold little water, so the underlay gives your new lawn a much better start. Have hoses connected before you leave.

Are there other ways to get turf in the Blue Mountains?

Yes, collecting is just one option. If towing up the mountain is not practical, you can arrange turf delivery in the Blue Mountains, book turf installation in the Blue Mountains or explore our turf supplies for the Blue Mountains.

When should I mow new turf in the mountains?

Leave the first mow for two to three weeks and keep the cutting height high. In the cooler mountain climate, growth can be slower, especially in autumn, so check that the roots have taken hold by gently lifting a corner first.

Trevor was fantastic from the very first time I spoke to him. He informed me on every detail , delivery time, watering/care instructions . He made sure the delivery truck didn’t park on my driveway and also marked out my block perfectly- making sure the turf layers got the job done correctly first time. Thank you so much for a truly great experience. The turf looks beautiful
