Lawns that suit mountain life
Choosing Turf Supplies for the Blue Mountains
Growing a lawn in the Blue Mountains is a different game from the plains below. Sandy, acidic soils sit over Hawkesbury sandstone, blocks are often steep, and tall gums throw a lot of shade. Further up, winters bring regular frost and the occasional dusting of snow.
We help mountain customers choose a variety for their particular village and block, whether it’s a sunny lower-mountains yard in Glenbrook or a shaded garden in Leura. Turf is harvested to order on our farm in Cornwallis, and we’ll help you work out how much to order so you can lay it in one go.
In short: Arrow Turf is a family-owned Hawkesbury turf farm with over 45 years of experience, supplying fresh-cut turf to homeowners, landscapers and builders across the Blue Mountains. Pricing depends on variety, area, roll size and pickup or delivery distance up the mountains. We harvest to order, with most orders ready within a day or two.

What Turf Varieties Can We Supplies?
Choosing Turf Varieties in the Blue Mountains
Mountain Lawn Supplies
Turf Supplies Suited to Blue Mountains Gardens
Mountain gardens are full of character, from weatherboard cottages in Lawson to brick homes in Springwood and older properties around Katoomba and Blackheath. Lawns here face shade from tall gums, cold air that settles in on winter nights and soils that drain fast and hold few nutrients. Many blocks slope steeply, which makes bare ground vulnerable to erosion. Getting the variety and preparation right at the start makes a big difference to how a new lawn copes through its first winter, and to how much work it needs afterwards.
We start with your location and conditions. A sunny lower-mountains backyard may suit Kikuyu or Wintergreen Couch, while a shaded upper-mountains garden is usually better with Sir Walter or Matilda soft leaf buffalo. We supply homeowners and trade customers alike, cut every order fresh and can help estimate quantities for terraced or sloping yards. Read about our turf supply service across greater Sydney.

Mountain Climate
Frost, Snow and Cold Winters in the Upper Mountains
The Blue Mountains climate shifts noticeably as you climb from Glenbrook toward Katoomba and Blackheath. In the upper villages especially, cold weather is the biggest factor in how a new lawn settles in, and it pays to plan around it.
Regular frost through winter. Frosty mornings are common in the upper mountains, and new turf laid in the depths of winter has a harder time establishing. Aim to lay in the warmer months so roots are well settled before the cold arrives.
A shorter growing season. Cooler temperatures mean lawns grow more slowly for more of the year. That makes good preparation even more important, with an 80/20 underlay giving roots the best possible start in the time available.
Occasional snow and cold snaps. Snow and icy spells can stress young turf. Keep foot traffic off frozen lawns, avoid mowing until the grass is actively growing again and be patient while it recovers.

Blue Mountains Supply Costs
How Much Do Turf Supplies Cost in the Blue Mountains?
Turf pricing in the Blue Mountains reflects the variety you choose, the area to be covered and how far up the mountains your order is travelling. Roll size and whether you collect from our farm or book delivery also matter. The table below shows what shapes a Blue Mountains turf quote.
| Price driver | How it affects your cost |
|---|---|
| Turf variety | Kikuyu is the most budget-friendly; soft leaf buffalo and premium couch cost more per m². |
| Quantity | Turf is priced per square metre, and larger orders can attract better rates. |
| Roll format | Maxi rolls suit big areas and are quoted separately from standard rolls. |
| Pickup, delivery or installation | Collecting from the farm avoids a delivery charge; delivery and laying are quoted on top. |

Lower Mountains to Katoomba
Turf Supplies From the Lower Mountains to Katoomba
The Blue Mountains region falls under Blue Mountains City Council. We supply turf to homes along the Great Western Highway corridor, to gardens near Wentworth Falls and Scenic World, and to properties bordering Blue Mountains National Park, where bushland and steep ground are part of everyday gardening.
Villages we regularly supply include Blaxland, Springwood, Faulconbridge, Lawson and Leura. Our farm at 104 Cornwallis Road, Cornwallis is around 40 minutes from the lower mountains via Penrith and the Great Western Highway, and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to Katoomba. We harvest to order so your turf arrives fresh, whichever village you call home.

How We Supply Turf to Blue Mountains Customers
Mountain orders need a little more planning, from choosing a variety for your altitude to timing the harvest around the weather. Once that’s settled, we cut fresh and organise pickup or delivery.
1. Measure your area: work out the square metres you need, or send us your measurements to check.
2. Choose your variety: pick from our five turf varieties, or ask us which suits your site best.
3. Place your order: call or order online and choose pickup, delivery or installation.
4. Receive fresh turf: your turf is cut to order and ready within a day or two, so it arrives fresh.
Steep Blocks and Shade Under Tall Mountain Gums
Beyond the cold, many mountain gardens wrestle with slopes and heavy shade, and both change what variety and how much turf you should order for your block.
Shade cast by tall gums. Big eucalypts block sunlight for much of the day. Sir Walter and Matilda soft leaf buffalo cope with reduced light much better than Kikuyu or the couches, which prefer full sun.
Steep, terraced gardens. Sloping blocks are prone to erosion and hard to lay evenly. Lay rolls across the slope, butt joins tightly and water gently so soil doesn’t wash out from underneath.
Sandstone soils that drain fast. Sandstone-derived soils drain quickly. Spread an 80/20 underlay before laying and keep up regular deep watering for about three weeks while roots establish.
Measuring awkward spaces. Terraces, paths and garden beds make it easy to under-order. Measure each level separately, add the totals together and include a small allowance for trimming around edges and steps.
Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Supplies in the Blue Mountains
Do you provide turf supplies in the Blue Mountains?
Yes. We supply fresh turf to homes and businesses across the Blue Mountains, from Glenbrook and Blaxland up to Katoomba and Blackheath. Our turf supplies are cut to order on our Cornwallis farm and can be collected or delivered.
Which turf handles shade under Blue Mountains gums?
Soft leaf buffalo varieties such as Sir Walter and Matilda are our first choice for shaded mountain gardens. They tolerate reduced light far better than Kikuyu or couch. Tell us how many hours of direct sun the area gets and we’ll advise.
When is the best time to lay turf in the upper mountains?
Aim for the warmer months so roots can establish before frost and cold weather arrive. Turf laid in mid-winter in the upper mountains establishes more slowly. Prepare a good underlay and water deeply once or twice a day for about three weeks.
How long does turf take to reach the Blue Mountains?
Our farm is around 40 minutes from the lower mountains via Penrith and the Great Western Highway, and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Katoomba. We harvest to order so turf supplies for the Blue Mountains arrive fresh and ready to lay.
Can I lay turf on a steep mountain block?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to protect sloping ground from erosion. Lay rolls across the slope with tight joins and water gently. On steep sites, plan in advance how you’ll move rolls from the pallet to each level.
Do trade customers order turf supplies for the Blue Mountains?
Yes. Landscapers, builders, schools and councils order turf supplies for Blue Mountains projects direct from our farm. We can supply larger volumes, schedule harvests to suit your job and deliver with forklift-equipped trucks that take the empty pallets away.
How much weight should I plan for on a Blue Mountains block?
Expect fresh turf to weigh roughly 15–20 kg for each square metre. On sloping mountain blocks, that weight adds up quickly, so plan where pallets will go and how you’ll carry rolls into the garden before your order arrives.
Do you offer other turf services in the Blue Mountains?
Yes. You can arrange turf pickup for the Blue Mountains from our farm, book turf delivery in the Blue Mountains with forklift placement, or ask about turf installation in the Blue Mountains, including old lawn removal, levelling and laying.
